I think it is time for the industry to start “thinking out of the box”, and when implementing the technology, I would always have this question in mind: how can I make it as productive and profitable as possible?Laura Casanellashttps://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-casanellas-luri-0106312/detail/recent-activity/shares/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6748877443699290050.post-35398291291595395402018-01-22T03:00:29.073-08:002018-01-22T03:00:29.073-08:00Great post, Laura. One question that I like is: Would all the investment in MT (through having your own trained engine or to "buy" it from an MT provider) compensate the price reduction I would need to offer to my customer (as an LSP) and to apply (to translators)? Sometimes MT needs to be offered because it is what the customer expects in terms of price discount, but it does not make sense financially for the LSP (the investment in time and effort). This is the reality I see; but I also see a different attitude, before it was "should we?" and now is more "when are we going to do it?" and, very specifically, -and I think this is what stops many organizations- "how are we going to go about it?"Laura Casanellashttps://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-casanellas-luri-0106312/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6748877443699290050.post-34024059552847326462018-01-18T06:21:47.471-08:002018-01-18T06:21:47.471-08:00MT has been around for over 70 years, with a recur...MT has been around for over 70 years, with a recurring "hype". This might be the time for leaving the "hype" stage and entering the "slope of enlightenment." Unfortunately, as Kirti correctly states in his introduction, most players in the industry have always been... reluctant to see technology as a strategic business component, and anticipate and embrace its evolution. This is the reason why most smaller LSPs and freelancers lag dramatically behind their customers. Well, actually many freelancers (vendors) are more ready and proactive than their clients (LSPs).
Who should "educate" the media about translation technology? Do you really think that one or two independent consultants and consulting firms can? And how many of them are really independent?

Laura writes "some companies have a person specialized in MT". I wonder how many out of the roughly 20.000 translation firms and companies in NA and WE. And still I'm impressed those having "a person" think one is enough, while in the near future every company is going to need a DS/ML/DL/AI department.Luigi Muziihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11617962606487603486noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6748877443699290050.post-45560446961962673052018-01-17T13:49:19.853-08:002018-01-17T13:49:19.853-08:00Hi Katrin, yes, this is the reality I have seen in...Hi Katrin, yes, this is the reality I have seen in the last couple of years; some companies (more and more, it is true) have a person specialized in MT, but not all of them. This is another skill they need to master.Laura Casanellashttps://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-casanellas-luri-0106312/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6748877443699290050.post-36559593522489732542018-01-17T00:30:23.107-08:002018-01-17T00:30:23.107-08:00A very true description of the situation in the la...A very true description of the situation in the language business right now. The "hype" documented in the familiar industry media outlets doesn't reflect where smaller LSPs, let alone individual translators stand at the moment. Thank you for this post!
